Prof. Samer Faraj
Samer Faraj holds the Canada Research Chair in Technology, Management & Healthcare at the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University. He is head of the research group on Complex Collaboration, and director of the Desautels PhD program. His current research focuses on complex collaboration in settings as diverse as health care organizations, knowledge teams, and online communities. He is also interested in how emergent social technologies are transforming organizations and allowing new forms of coordination and organizing to emerge. He has published over 95 journal articles, refereed proceedings, and book chapters in outlets such as: Management Science, Organization Science, MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of AIS, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Computer Mediated Communication, Business Horizon, OMICS, and Annals of Emergency Medicine. His work has been cited over 9300 times. He has recently completed terms as Senior Editor at Organization Science (2006-2012) and at Information Systems Research (2012-2014). In addition, he serves on the editorial board of three other journals. He has won multiple best paper awards, most recently the AIS 2012 Best Published Paper Award and the 2013 Desautels Best Doctoral Advisor Award. Institutions such as SSHRC, NSF, IBM, the Fulbright foundation, and the Government of Quebec have funded his research.
Prof. Peter Nugus
Peter Nugus is Assistant Professor in the Centre for Medical Education and the Department of Family Medicine at McGill University. He has a background in Sociology, Political Science and Adult Education. Peter is an organizational sociologist and ethnographer whose fieldwork has spanned Canada, the US, Australia, the Netherlands, Argentina and Ecuador. His ethnographic research in emergency departments and various acute and community settings, and teaching, has focused on workplace and organizational learning, care coordination, and culture and identity in complex organizations. Peter held a Fulbright post-doctoral scholarship at the University of California Los Angeles and an Australian government Endeavour post-doctoral scholarship at Columbia University in New York. Peter has publications in leading journals, such as the British Medical Journal and Social Science & Medicine and competitive grants, including from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), and has delivered more than 50 papers at national and international conferences. Peter has also been a post-doctoral scholar at the University of New South Wales (where he also undertook his PhD) and the Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research, and has been a visiting scholar at the University of Buenos Aires and the Australian National University.
Prof. Emmanuelle Vaast

Emmanuelle Vaast is Associate Professor of IS at the Desautels Faculty of Management. Her research examines how social practices emerge and change with the implementation and use of new technologies and how these new practices are associated with organizational dynamics. She has in particular investigated the learning processes taking place at different levels (communities and networks of practice, for instance) and the boundary spanning involved in these dynamics when new Information Systems get implemented and used. Emmanuelle has become fascinated by the new practices and social and societal changes associated with social media such as blogs and microblogs. Some of the themes she has especially been interested in deal with the emergence of new organizational forms and with new dynamics associated with organizational and occupational identification.
Emmanuelle’s research so far has been qualitative, relying upon case-based evidence analyzed from an interpretive perspective. She has however become increasingly in the opportunities and challenges of combining qualitative and quantitative analysis of electronically-collected data.
Prof. Saku Mantere
Saku Mantere was trained as a high school philosophy teacher and telecommunications engineer before doing a PhD in Industrial Engineering and Management in Finland (in what is now called Aalto University). Now Associate Professor of Strategy and Organization at the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University and Associate Director at the Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management, Saku’s research focuses on strategic organizations: on questions such as what it is that makes organizations strategic and how strategic management affects organizations. He is particularly interested in strategic change, middle management and organizational communication, as well as the methodology of studying management and organizations. Before moving to Montréal, Saku has taught at Warwick Business School, UK; Hanken School of Economics, Finland; Rouen Business School (now NEOMA Business School), France and Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University), Finland. Saku played a key role in the foundation of the Helsinki University of Arts (www.uniarts.fi) as its first chairman of the board. His research has been published in the leading academic outlets for management and organization studies. Saku has been awarded multiple times for his teaching and research, most recently for his co-authorship of the best published paper in Organization and Management Theory (Academy of Management, 2015).
Prof. Steven L. Johnson
Steven L. Johnson is an Associate Professor of Commerce at U. of Virginia McIntire School of Commerce in picturesque Charlottesville, Virginia. Dr. Johnson earned a B.S. in Computer Science and an M.B.A. from the College of William and Mary, and a Ph.D. from the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland (2008). His doctoral dissertation studied the role of leadership in continued participation in online communities. His major research focus is online communities as a form of social media that supports organizational knowledge management. He also studies knowledge management in healthcare. Dr. Johnson’s research has appeared in Organization Science and at international conferences sponsored by leading academic organizations including the Academy of Management, the Association of Information Systems, and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in social media innovation, information technology management, business systems analysis, and business intelligence. He has created an undergraduate course on Social Media Innovation that includes a Social Media Innovation Quest.
Prof. Adrian Yeow

Adrian Yeow is an Assistant Professor in Nanyang Business School at Nanyang Technological University. He has a Ph.D. from the R.H. School of Business, University of Maryland, College Park. His dissertation is on the development and implementation of electronic health record systems within hospitals. Adrian’s research interests include coordination and knowledge integration among project teams, implementation studies of complex information systems, and social construction of IT artifacts and IT products. He has published several papers in journals such as JAIS, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Information & Organization, and IJAIS. He has also presented in top refereed conferences as International Conference of Information Systems (ICIS), and Academy of Management (AOM). Prior to entering academia, Adrian was a Manager of Product Development for a major Singapore communications company.
Prof. Bijan Azad
Bijan Azad is associate professor at the Olayan School of Business, American University of Beirut and academic director of Samih Darwazeh Center for Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship. His research interests are in how actors enact innovative technologies and procedures in organizations within the public sector, hospitals and private sector. He earned his Ph.D. and masters degrees from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Bijan Azad has over 20 years of experience in the systems integration industry before re-joining academe. His research has been published in Journal of Strategic Information Systems, European Journal of Information Systems, Government Information Quarterly, Information Systems Journal, Journal of Global Information Management, and International Journal of Accounting Information Systems, Academy of Management Best Paper Proceedings, America's Conference on Information Systems Proceedings as well as several practitioner publications. He was the Organizational Communication and Information Systems Division’s recipient of the Best Conference Paper Award at the Academy of Management 2008 annual meeting in Anaheim, California, USA.
Prof. Sri Kudaravalli
Sri Kudaravalli is an Assistant Professor in the Operations Management and Information Technology department at HEC Paris. He received his Ph.D. from the Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland at College Park (2010). He studies the technologies and processes that facilitate effective collaboration in knowledge work in settings such as online communities, large-scale distributed groups, and organizational teams. His work has been presented at several conferences where it has been nominated for or won awards and has been published in the Journal of the Association for Information Systems (JAIS). Prior to joining academia, he was a consultant for various organizations for nearly a decade.

At KIN 30 junior and senior researchers conducting research in the field of digital innovation. Marleen’s research has been published in various international journals and books.
Prof. Ann Majchrzak
Ann Majchrzak (pronounced: “My-Shock”), Professor of Information Systems, Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California and Visiting Professor, Department of Information Systems Management, ESADE Business School, Barcelona, Spain. PhD, Social Psychology, UCLA, 1980. Fellow of the Association for Information Systems 2012. My general research interests are in understanding how IS affordances can support worker agility and ingenuity within collaborative settings, with a special interest in how IS can give voice to the disenchanted and disenfranchised. This has led to research on the role of IS in innovative problem-solving in distributed teams; knowledge-sharing and creation in high-risk, volatile, and emergent contexts; enterprise knowledge co-creation among dispersed strangers; online collaborative innovation, and, most recently, innovative collaborative co-creation in open innovation and crowdsourcing. Some of the journals I’ve published in include: MIS Quarterly, Organization Science, Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, CACM, Management Science, Information Systems Research, IEEE Transactions, JMIS, among others. I have served on three National Academy of Sciences committees. I have received research grants from NSF, SIM-APC, Russell Sage Foundation, CIGREF, among others as well as partnered with numerous companies in joint action research (my preferred mode of research), such as: Hewlett-Packard, Texas Instruments, General Motors, Jet Propulsion Laboratories, Northrop, and IBM. I have written several books, including a recent collaboration with M Lynne Markus (Methods for Policy Research, 2nd Ed) in which we are advocating an evidence-based approach to managerial decision making. I have developed software (TOP-Modeler) to support sociotechnical decision making. My service to the professional community includes a 5-year term on the Organization Communication and Information Systems Division executive council of the Academy of Management, as well as Senior Editor for Organization Science for many years, and also now Senior Editor for MIS Quarterly. I have been fortunate to be involved in editing many special issues for journals: the most recent one is for MISQ on “ICT and Societal Challenges” (not due until 12/2013).
Prof. Hani Safadi
Prof. Hani Safai is an Assistant Professor at University of Georgia - Terry College of Business. Prior to his PhD from McGill University, Desautels Faculty of Management, Prof. Safadi obtained a bachelor of engineering and a master of science from McGill University. Hani's research is focused on open-source health information technology and open innovation communities in healthcare. Hani has worked and consulted on diverse projects including projects involving social networks and healthcare IT. Further, he has experience in conducting quantitative and qualitative research projects with two papers under review in top IS journals (MISQ & ISR) and seven North American conference publications (ASAC, ICIS, AMCIS & AOM) so far.
Prof. Stella Pachidi
Dr. Stella Pachidi is a Lecturer in Information Systems at Judge Business School, University of Cambridge. Her research interests lie in the intersection of technology, work and organizing. She performs qualitative research while being informed by the fields of practice theory, knowledge and knowing, collaboration and coordination, temporality, science and technology studies, and so forth. Her current research projects include the introduction of analytics and big data technologies in organizations, managing challenges in the workplace with digitization, and practices of knowledge collaboration across boundaries. She holds a PhD in Business Administration from VU University Amsterdam, a MSc in Business Informatics from Utrecht University, and a MSc in Electrical and and Computer Engineering from National Technical University of Athens.
A.J. Rubineau, MD MPH
A.J. Rubineau is a family physician with interests in public health and health administration. She completed her undergraduate work at MIT, earned her MD from Yale School of Medicine, and conducted research in Rajasthan, India while earning her Masters in Public Health through the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. More recently, she served as the Associate Program Medical Director of the Massachusetts Correctional Health Program, and as the medical lead on Cornell University's eating disorders program. Her interests include health care delivery to vulnerable populations.
Dr. Jan-Kees Schakel
Jan-Kees Schakel is research fellow of the KIN research group at the VU University, researcher and program manager at the Dutch Police, and ceo of SensingClues. Jan-Kees earned a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in International Management of Land, Water and Environment from the International Agricultural College Larenstein, an M.Sc. in Business Information Systems from the University of Amsterdam, and a Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam (2013). Combining these educational strands, his research and work concentrate on cross-boundary collaboration. More specifically, he studies the management of information, knowledge and expertise in (anticipation of) emergency and other fast-response situations. In his research he mostly takes a qualitative and interventionist approach. In his latest work he combines internet of things-technologies with heuristic (big) data analytics and self-organising networks of practice to combat wildlife crime.
Prof. Alaric Bourgoin
A former senior consultant in business strategy, Prof. Alaric Bourgoin holds a doctorate in socioeconomics of innovation from the école des Mines de Paris. After a brief passage at Harvard, he is now Assistant Professor in management at HEC Montréal. His research focuses on management consulting, complex transformation, and performance.
Prof. Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett is Professor of Information Systems and Innovation Studies at the Judge Business School, Cambridge University. He has previously served as Director (Associate Dean) of Programmes. His research interests examine how digital technologies can be used to enable business innovation with a particular focus on financial services, healthcare, and international development. He has served as Senior Editor of MIS Quarterly, Information & Organization, Journal of the Association of Information Systems, and has been on the editorial board of Organization Science. His research has been published in journals such as Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, Accounting, Organizations and Society, Academy of Management Journal, and Organization Science. He has consulted and provided executive education for a variety of organizations including Sagentia, BT, IBM, World Health Organization, Bank of China, and Statoil.
Prof. Mahmood Zargar
Mahmood Shafeie Zargar is an Assistant Professor at the Knowledge, Information and Innovation Research Group, Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, VU University Amsterdam. He holds a Masters in Management Strategy from ESSEC Business School and a Bachelors in Industrial Management from University of Tehran. His current research interests include knowledge diffusion in open source communities and the social role of information systems in scientific collaboration. He has presented his work in ASAC (Administrative Sciences Association of Canada) conference. When not busy revising his papers, you find Mahmood taking candid shots with his antique Russian cameras.
Prof. Anastasia Sergeeva
Dr. Anastasia Sergeeva is an Assistant Professor at the Knowledge, Information and Innovation Research Group, School of Business and Economics, VU University Amsterdam. She holds a PhD in Management from the Graduate School of Management of St. Petersburg State University and a Masters in Management from the same school. Her research interests include technology-mediated organisational change, transformation of professional work and emergence of new forms of organising due to digital technologies. Dr. Sergeeva’s research has been published in MIS Quarterly, Journal of Management Inquiry, Human Resource Management Journal and Health Informatics Journal. Being inspired by professional background in healthcare management, Dr. Sergeeva has a specific interest in the impact of technology on work in healthcare settings.
Prof. Karla Sayegh
Karla Sayegh is an Assistant Professor (University Lecturer) in the Organisation Theory & Information Systems subject group at Cambridge Judge Business School. Her research examines how experts coordinate their work under conditions of uncertainty, rapid change and complexity. She also studies how emerging technologies and spaces transform work and organizing. Karla’s recent fieldwork followed two of Canada’s largest tertiary care hospitals as they merged their specialty units and relocated onto a newly built and equipped CAN$ 3 billion super hospital facility. The papers emerging from this ethnography have won a best paper award, two best student paper awards and a paper of merit award at the Academy of Management (AOM), the Organisational Behaviour in Health Care (OBHC) conference and the Administrative Science Association of Canada (ASAC). Her co-authored paper in Information and Organization entitled ‘Working and organizing in the age of the learning algorithm’ is among the journal’s most cited papers. Prior to her academic career, Karla spent over 12 years in strategy consulting, real estate private equity, venture funding and executive university administration. Karla holds a BS in Economics, summa cum laude, from the Wharton School, a BA in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, summa cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania, an MBA with distinction from Yale University and a PhD in Management from McGill University.
